During this workshop, medical students worked with residents in the state-of-the-art simulation lab at the IEEI where they learned how to suture under the surgical microscope. To simulate the human eye, students first practiced free-hand on pig ears, followed by use of the microscope, and finally on pig corneas using sutures as small as 10-0. In addition, residents demonstrated the use of the EyeSi Cataract training simulator.

The slit lamp is the quintessential tool of the ophthalmic healthcare provider. Anyone who has ever needed glasses, contacts, or visited an optometrist or ophthalmologist for any other reason will immediately recognize. The slit lamp allows the clinician to quickly & effectively visualize pathology in just about any compartment of the eye, but especially the anterior compartment. Mastering the slit lamp exam requires a great deal of dexterity, time, & practice.
